    • GRIFFITH AP IEVAN, m. Angharard, dau. of Tegwared-y-Baiswen, son of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales, and had issue,

      I. Sir Howel-y-Fwyall, who distinguished himself at Poitiers, and is said to have been the person who took the French king prisoner. On this occasion he received the honour of knighthood, and still further to commemorate his services, his sovereign conferred on him a mess of meat, to be served before his pole-axe forever. This mess, upon his death, was carried down to be distributed among the poor for his soul’s sake, till the reign of ELIZABETH, when the custom was abolished. (History of Gwydyr family.)
